Harold Kushner nació en Brooklyn, Nueva York, y se graduó en la Universidad de Columbia. Se ordenó y doctoró en estudios bíblicos en el Seminario Teológico Judío. Es rabino desde hace más de treinta años. En 1981, a fin de superar una tragedia familiar, escribió Cuando la gente buena sufre (Emecé, 1994), libro que lo lanzó a la fama y se ha convertido en un verdadero clásico de nuestro tiempo. Es autor también de When Children Ask About God, Commanded to Live, Cuando nada te basta (Emecé, 1987), ¿Quién necesita a Dios? (Emecé, 1991) y Por la vida (Emecé, 1995).

Rabbi Harold Samuel Kushner is a prominent American rabbi aligned with the progressive wing of Conservative Judaism, and a popular author.
Born in Brooklyn, Kushner was educated at Columbia University and later obtained his rabbinical ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) in 1960. The same institution awarded him a doctoral degree in Bible in 1972. Kushner has also studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, taught at Clark University and the Rabbinical School of the JTS, and received six honorary doctorates.
